With ice cream in excess, already melting in the cups Dixie’s newest slave poured for us, Max and I pull up to the house to find… well, a construction zone.

It’s only been a few days since Tyler started work, but the front curb is stacked twelve feet high with rolled carpet, bagged trash, and a shitty old bathtub that the immature side of my brain says we should turn into a boat at the lake by sealing the plug hole.

But I don’t.

Because I’m a mature adult now.

“Come on, Max.” I balance my tray of ice cream in one hand and open the car door with the other.

Climbing out, Max stands beside me and studies the pile of trash like it’s as foreign to him as if Tyler himself was standing on top and spinning on his head.

“He’s been busy, huh?” I shut the door and lead my mini-charge through the yard.

The grass is not as lush as it is in the spring, but considering the heat, it’s doing as well as that in neighboring yards. A garden I sort of started while living here is now overgrown once more, but the foundations are there; I see the shape of the flowerbed, the rich soil beneath, just waiting for my permanent relocation in the winter.

As soon as spring hits next year, I plan to work hard and bring this home the rest of the way from empty and forgotten to a homestead worthy of a family.

On the front porch, Laine sits in a pair of denim cutoffs—the real kind of denim—but the top button remains open, because right above that is a basketball belly and the cutest outie bellybutton anyone ever saw in their lives.

While Laine grunts and struggles to stand, I snicker and traipse forward to offer her my hand. She’s not a large woman, but I swear, the baby is six feet long already and pointing straight ahead, so I have to stand to the side or risk getting stabbed.

“You look soooo uncomfortable.” And yet, I giggle. “How you doing, Big Momma?”

“Give me some of that effing ice cream.” The moment she’s steady on her feet, Laine leans over my paper tray of desserts and selects a tub and plastic spoon. “Who the hell thought it would be a good idea to be pregnant in the middle of summer?”

“Well… you and Ang, evidently. Did you bring the stuff?”

She snorts, her mouth full of chocolatey goodness, and turns. Reaching back to the deck, she grabs her overly large purse and yanks out stapled paperwork. “You make it sound like we’re exchanging something illicit.”

“Ice cream for paperwork sounds illicit to me.” I take the packets and quickly scan the front page. They’re literally only enrollment forms—easily collectable from the front office on any given school day. Hell, if I’d taken a second longer, I might have even found them on the website.

Regardless, I have them now, so I turn on my heel and lead Max and Laine through the side yard.

“Hello?” I call out, loud and obnoxious enough to make the hammering inside the house halt.
